In all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:37-39
Since the beginning of time, people have always been tempted to do their own thing. When doing our own thing contradicts God’s will, His plans, or His desires for our life, we find ourselves separated from God. Willful separation from God is a simple definition of sin.
John 3:16 says that God loves the world and He doesn’t want us to be separated from Him. This verse describes that separation as “perishing” or suffering. In other words when we are separated from God we are disconnected from the ultimate source of life. That means the end result of that separation is death. But God wanted humanity to live forever in relationship with him. So he sent His Son, Jesus to help us understand God’s will and to reconnect us back to God giving us the ability to live forever.
The most amazing part about Jesus coming to earth was his willingness to “perish” or suffer in our place. He took the result or penalty of sin upon himself, and willingly went to a cross to die in our place so we would never have to experience death as a permanent separation from God. In fact he proved that physical death would not be permanent by rising from the dead himself (Romans 5).
His death and resurrection cleared the only possible path for all humanity to return to a relationship with God. That’s why He said that He was the only way to God (John 14:6) because nobody has ever made the path back to God more accessible. The amazing thing is that the reason He did that, was simply because He loved you!
"Therefor go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20
After you’ve taken the initial step to follow Christ you can’t just keep that kind of excitement to yourself. You have to let the world know about your new journey. That’s why Jesus calls every one of his followers to the symbolic & prophetic act of Water Baptism. This simple & public declaration of your faith, is your way of telling those around you that the sins of your past have been washed away and that in this new resurrected life in Christ, you now enjoy the freedom of forgiveness from all your sins. By going into the water symbolizes that your old way of living is passed and buried with Christ and coming up out of the water symbolizes your brand new resurrected life in Christ. All this is made possible by the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.
People often have questions regarding baptism: “Why should I be baptized? I’ve already been baptized. Do I have to do it again?” “Does it matter if someone is sprinkled or dunked?” All of these questions and more will be answered in the class we offer for free on "Water Baptism" offered frequently at our Church fellowship.
Romans 6: 3-9, "Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been [b]freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him."
Mark 16: 15-16, "And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned."
We modern people think of miracles as the suspension of the natural order, but Jesus meant them to be the restoration of the natural order. The Bible tells us that God did not originally make the world to have disease, hunger, and death in it. Jesus has come to redeem where it is wrong and heal the world where it is broken. His miracles are not just proofs that he has power but also wonderful foretastes of what he is going to do with that power. Jesus' miracles are not just a challenge to our minds, but a promise to our hearts, that the world we all want is coming. - Timothy J. Keller
